The year was 1993. I was at the ripe age of 9 when the most epic of stop-motion animated films was released. I remember it was something I had looked forward to because it premiered around the Halloween season. After seeing it just once, I had every song from Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas in my head. It wasn’t completely unheard of for me to already be a Tim Burton fan- I was already a fan of the Batman films he directed, Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands. The imagery was always haunting but there was still a whimsy to it that I clung on to. But NMB4Xmas was far more kid-friendly, and its melancholic tunes supported with Jack Skellington’s resonant voice was just something that pulled at my little-kid heart.
Since back then we had to wait around for a VHS release, the world kind of exploded with incredible merchandise based off the film. I had my own mini collection of Lock, Shock and Barrel and an oversized plush of a glow-in-the-dark Oogie Boogie. However, getting any kind of Jack and Sally was just out of the question. They were always sold out, unavailable or incredibly overpriced. So, I happily settled with my gigantic VHS version of the movie once it finally became available.
Now between then and the present moment, I have no idea when NMB4Xmas became so popular again, but speaking as an adult who has lived in the fandom – I’m elated that it has! It’s created an opportunity for some incredible re-imagining of these beloved characters; some that tell a slightly different story or some that build on the story we remember.
