Silicone. It’s one of the most popular materials in the doll industry, but what exactly is it, and what makes it so sought after by collectors? In this post we set out to answer some of your silicone related questions so you can make an informed choice when selecting a doll.
We’ll also be discussing a new material some doll companies have been promoting lately called “silicone vinyl.” Spoiler alert: It can be a misleading term.
Why silicone is so special.
Silicone is a man-made material known for its soft feel and flexible texture. It is synthetic yet made of completely natural ingredients, with its base component being silica (hence the name silicone) which is found in sand. Its other elements such as oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon are naturally-occurring as well, making it not only useful but environmentally-friendly.

In addition to being “green,” silicone is safe, non-toxic, and resistant to bacteria. It is also long-lasting and durable, making it a great choice for collectibles, toys, and lifelike baby dolls.
What makes silicone baby dolls so popular?
Silicone is desired by doll collectors for one main reason—its incredibly lifelike feel. When baby dolls are made from silicone, their skin is soft and has a “give” when pressed, just like real human skin. These dolls are also extremely flexible. The little fingers and toes can be bent naturally, and when you hold them in your arms, they “snuggle” back into you. Couple this with their lifelike weighting, and these dolls provide all the comfort and joy of holding an actual baby.
The term “silicone vinyl” can be misleading.
Silicone is a high-quality material, so dolls made from it tend to cost more. Because of this, some manufacturers have begun promoting dolls made from silicone vinyl “blends” which supposedly offer both the flexibility and quality of silicone, and the more affordable price of vinyl. Unfortunately though, these claims are sometimes misleading. Recently we even lab-tested a doll supposedly featuring one of these combinations, only to find that there wasn’t a single drop of silicone. Just extra chemical agents to make the material feel softer. Turns out, if you want a doll with the realism of silicone, there simply isn’t an alternative.
